You can also choose to only have that on or off for specific conversations. Marking it unread would make it bold again so that I know to see it again and it won't get lost among the read ones.
Press Ctrl + Q to mark the message as read. Repeat to toggle a message status from read to unread and back again. I'd like to be able to read text messages but still be able to mark them unread if for example I read a text but I am not able to reply until later that day. To mark several messages as either read or unread at once, click the first message, hold down Ctrl, click the other messages, and then select the option you want. You can turn that off for all conversations in Settings > Messages > Turn off 'Send Read Receipts'. Mark text messages, voicemails, missed call notifications as unread.

If the latest version of the app is not yet available to you through the Play Store, you can download Android Messages v2.3 via APK Mirror - but at your own risk as it is the not the official channel. While there isn't an option to make a text or iMessage as unread, you can choose to remove the 'read' notification on iMessages if you would like.
